calle San Lazaro, Centro Habana

With the advent of the new millennium, Cuba stages itself in a surreal ascendancy. Havana’s once illustrious department store “Fin de Siglo” is today in ruins. The images captured upon my return to Cuba denote a culture rich in its heritage, today detonated as is “Fin de Siglo”. Havana always dismembered to the rhythm of its loyal inhabitants stands framed by her fulgent solitude and stalled by her turbulent present, demonstrating against her history, her fiery to subsist in body and soul.

Books & Books in conjunction with the Coral Gables Gallery Night presented an exhibit of photographs entitled Cuba al "Fin de Siglo" 1999 (Cuba at Century’s End 1999) by Carlos Alberto Fleitas. When architect Carlos Fleitas returned to Cuba, he found the country to be best represented by Havana’s once illustrious department store "Fin de Siglo" which now lays in ruins. This exhibit of color photographs is co-sponsored by Cuban National Heritage, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the cultural roots of the Cuban Nation. http://www.booksandbooks.com/
